Kumasi Music are back for Round 2 with 18 more dance floor shakers to make you move and groove. Last year’s compilation was one of the stand out deep house VA digital albums of 2013, featuring killer works from Kolombo, wAFF, No Artificial Colours, Tapesh and more. For Volume 2, Kumasi Music bring together a similarly diverse collective of international deep house and nu-disco talent, and with them over 120 minutes of expert new material. Rob!n’s beautifully crafted Promises sets the tone. A hypnotic female vocal hook and warped bass combine with dreamy synths and playful percussion to deliver as decent a set-opener as you are likely to hear. Mexican duo Jarquin & Cano move into darker territory and dish out the kind of exciting nu-skool bassline which has been such a feature of the Kumasi sound over the past 12 months. Cosmic number Modern Planet by Spanish duo Animal Picnic sees scattered claps decorate an expansive bassline, whilst the melody could come straight out of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Lou Van’s powerful nu-disco floor filler Do You Mind couples the artist’s own vocals and production deftness to handsome effect, before Greek artist George Absent and vocalist Princess Zi collaborate splendidly on deep house exclusive The Boy With The Cloud. Tastemaker by Swiss producer Andrea Wenger is a much dubbier affair, where Chicago house style claps and oldskool pads harmonise to create a unique DJ tool that is sure to turn the head of any raver. Lessovsky’s Make My Day shifts from classic deep house to bumping garage and back again, where deep house chords and interchanging vocals combine with a roaring bass line to knockout effect. Barcelona based Italian Matteo Floris appears on Kumasi for the second time in 2014 with big room hip-house record Wanna Do, before Ecuador’s Ordonez scores with Bout Time, a driving nu-disco groove accompanies androgynous vocals and a huge hypnotic whirling synth. French Crosstown Rebels duo Melokolektiv have groove and soul in spades, and Wake Up once again exemplifies their infectious classic deep house sound which is winning them plaudits the world over. American New Yorker Edmond Binoge keeps things rolling with Chess Mat, a peak-time tech bomb that builds and drops to devastating effect, before Brazilian Pop Art boss Re Dupre joins the party with his Latin tinged G-House bomb Street Dreams, where a driving groove and eerie bassline resonate beside Dupre’s echoic sounding vocals. CUFF and Lou Lou Records duo Tainted Souls go deep with It Can Never, a tech-house growler perfect for taking things up a notch, followed by Bully, a similarly jacking tech house affair from Lithuania’s Markas which fuses bouncy percussion and sweeping italo-disco synths as expertly as ever. As the compilation begins to wind down Nicolas Alisferi produces a Balearic fused deep houser in Lovely Day which samples vocals from Blaze’s timeless track of the same name where warm pads and classic vocals combine to evoke images of a quintessential Ibizan sunset. Forlorn is Croatian producer Paarkat’s latest inspired work, where 80’s disco, a slo-mo groove and melodic synths fuse in this delightful party starter. Finally Dubai’s Shoby brings the album to a close with his typically emotive nu-disco style. Warm and moving, Up & Down combines a bubbly infectious bassline with sultry vocals to ensure your night ends on a high. The compilation closes with a Bonus Remix of Jarquin & Cano’s We Are Here from Leeds born UK artist Matt Fear. In typical snarling fashion, Fear delivers a spooky bass-heavy re-rub which will flex the dance floor and your soul. With 18 tracks of such high quality at your disposal, there is undoubtedly something for everyone in this well executed collection of some of the finest international house producers currently making their mark.
